Pat Hynds
pat@ladb.unm.eduPat Hynds, who began working at LADB in March 1994, is Political Affairs Editor at the Data Base. Ms. Hynds is responsible for planning and supervising the production of NotiSur.
Ms. Hynds received her B.A. in 1977 in Spanish and Chicano Studies from California State University at Northridge. She received her M.A. in Mexican-American Studies in 1979, with a specialist teaching credential in Bilingual/Cross-Cultural Education.
Ms. Hynds taught in a bilingual program with the Los Angeles city schools before going overseas in 1980 as an associate with the Maryknoll Society, a Catholic organization. She worked in Nicaragua for six years, helping to create Envio, a monthly publication on political and social events in Nicaragua. She spent much of her time giving presentations on the situation in Nicaragua to visitors to Managua as well as in the US, Latin America, and Asia.
Ms. Hynds also worked on the administration team for the Maryknoll associate program at the Latin America area level for eight years (1983-1991). During her work for Maryknoll, she travelled extensively throughout Latin America, from Mexico to Chile, writing and speaking on the political and social situation in Latin America.
From 1991-1994, Ms. Hynds worked in Lima, Peru, as the director and managing editor of Noticias Aliadas/Latinamerica Press, a weekly bilingual publication covering politics, economics, human rights, church, and environment in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ms. Hynds returned to the US in 1994. Her areas of expertise include general Latin American politics, US-Latin American relations, church-state relations in Latin America, the social effects of economic policies, and elections, with special emphasis on Nicaragua, Peru, and Mexico.
