Joe Gardner Wessely
joe@ladb.unm.eduJoe Gardner Wessely, staff writer, is a radio and print journalist from New Mexico with a background in public affairs, political and cultural reporting.
An alumnus of Deep Springs College and Brown University, Joe also conducted independent research while studying the Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, Mexico.
His work has appeared on more than a dozen regional and national radio news programs, including Free Speech Radio News, Radio High Country News, National Public Radio, Alternative Radio, Latino U.S.A., Independent and National Native News, and Workers Independent News Service, as well as the KUNM Evening Report. In 2002 he helped rebuild the news department at KPFT-Houston. He has also published stories for various New Mexico newsweeklies.
He has covered the peace process in Chiapas, Mexico, stories from the U.S.-Mexico border region, and spoken with international figures and immigrant communities living in different parts of the U.S.
From 2000-2003 he received top honors from the New Mexico Associated Press Broadcasters, getting a 1st place award in the categories of Documentary, Public Service, and Feature and General News in various years. In 2002 he was nominated as one of five finalists for the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize for radio reporters under the age of 35 and in 2003 he received the National Federation of Community Broadcasters Silver Reel Award in the Local News/Commentary category.
